Star Wars: Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter

This was a fantastic book.  I almost decided to bypass this one in my journey through all the Star Wars novels, but I am glad that I didn’t.  I thought it would be more of s stand-alone story and not essential to the overall plot surrounding the Jedi, Coruscant, and Darth Sideous, but I was wrong.  This book, much more so than Cloak of Deception, and was true prequel to Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

This book follows Darth Maul’s final mission before we meet him in Episode 1.  It also deals with Obi-Wan and Qui-gon, whose mission previous to Episode 1 ties directly into the Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo and the events that transpire in the movie.  I was very happy with the continuity of this book as it ties into the overall Star Wars Universe.  And the author does a fantastic job of writing prose that flows in an easy-to-read manner.  I found myself turning pages faster than I normally do, not only because of the intriguing story, but also because it was just so easy to read.  Not that the book read like a Youth novel.  It was quite the opposite, actually.  But somehow the writer’s prose involved me with the story and kept me turning pages.  I would like to read more by Mr. Reaves.

I hope that other novels in this series are as well written and tie into the overall story as this one does.  If this is to be the case, I am in for a very enjoyable experience by reading all of these novels.
